The collection master (site map) file isn't pre-processed prior to it's transformation because there is no need to.

Templates that are applied to the master map

Templates defined for the master map in the publishing package are applied to the collection tree to produce the following outputs:

  • HTML unordered lists to serve as the source for the site map and drop down menus
  • Scripts that build menu content or add interactivity to the drop down menus
  • HTML Help publication content files (hhc and hhp files)
  • ASP.NET web.sitemap files

When publising your collection, all the templates listed in the package definition file are applied to the master file, possibly resulting in multiple output documents. The following collection options generate different output documents based on the master file:

Different master output options
Option Output file Description
ASP.NET SiteMap web.sitemap Publish a site map file compatible with ASP.NET 2.0. This file contains all the pages set to appear in the menu. If you publish multiple alanguage, the language extension is added to the the web.sitemap file. As an example, a French and English publication would output web.sitemap.en and web.sitemap.fr.
HTML Help fileroot.hhc and fileroot.hhp Output an HTML Help content (.hhc) file and a project (.hhp) file that is compiled during the publishing process.
