In this tutorial, you'll learn how to set some non visual properties for your topics. These properties are often called metadata in most content management systems.

You can set some topic properties from the task pane on the right. The information you enter through the task pane is not part of the topic visual content but used during the publishing process.

Some of this information might appear in the target publication depending on options you select and the template that is applied to the topics.

Set the short description

The short description is typically used for link preview and searching. This text appears below the links to sub topics.

To add a short description to your topics:

  1. Make sure the task pane on the right is visible;
  2. Enter a short description for each of the sub levels topics;
Tip

You can easily add or replace the short description while editing a topic by selecting the text you want to use as the short description and clicking the Description button above the editor.

When a topic is saved, the first paragraph is automatically copied to the short description field if it's empty.

The page short description ends up in the description HTML META tag:

		<meta name="description" content="page short description" />

Add some keywords

While this technique has been challenged for a while by new ranking systems, it's always a good idea to add keywords to your pages to increase the likelihood web surfers find them when they use search engines.

Keywords you enter for the topic (and the collection) are automatically transformed to HTML META tags during the publishing process.

The keywords associated with the whole collection and the keywords associated with each page end up in the keywords META tag:

		<meta name="keywords" content="collection + page keywords" />

Search Engine Optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, has become an area of expertise in itself and definitely worth further investigation from your part as a web publisher. Searchenginewatch.com is a good place to start your journey.

Tip

You can also add keywords to the collection as a whole. The keywords you set for the collection are copied to each topic published through this collection.

Refer to the Editing topic information in the user guide for a description of the other available options.
